Proving Paper Roll Width Measurement Accuracy On-Site in 30 Minutes

How do you prove that laser sensors can accurately measure paper roll width on an active production floor?

You test them under real-world conditions.

Laser-View Technologies set out to answer that question with an on-site demonstration designed to be fast, simple, and practical. Our team brought their own laser sensors and a purpose-built microcontroller to a customer’s facility and tested the system on the production floor using actual paper rolls.

The setup was intentionally lean:

  • The laser sensors were zip-tied to stands
  • The controller was zip-tied to the safety fence
  • No permanent mounting was required
  • The test was completed without any facility downtime

The results confirmed what our team set out to prove. The system measured paper roll width with an accuracy of ±0.1 inch. The setup took less than 30 minutes, and the customer had a working, on-site proof of concept without permanent installation or downtime.

Why the Customer Needed This Solution

This customer was previously using SICK DME series laser sensors to measure paper roll width, but the system wasn’t delivering the accuracy or performance they needed.

Rather than asking the customer to take the equipment off the production floor or wait through a lengthy evaluation process, Laser-View Technologies brought the solution directly to them. Using real rolls, real production conditions, and a simple temporary setup, our team was able to demonstrate the potential of a different approach in less than 30 minutes.

This is why expertise matters.

What separates a working solution from a frustrating one is the team behind it — people who understand laser sensors and industrial automation together, not just one or the other.

If your current measurement system isn’t performing the way it should, Laser-View Technologies can help you find a better approach.
