Join Laser-View Technologies at the 30th AIST Crane Symposium from June 10th to 12th, 2024. This annual event is made for thought leaders, professionals, and enthusiasts within the steel manufacturing industry.

Laser-View Technologies’ President, Steven Lubeck, will be presenting “Sensor-Based Guidance Alternative to Full Crane Automation” on Tuesday, June 11th, at 8:45 AM.

Overhead cranes are used in steel mills to transport coils and slabs through the production process. Reducing time lost to material handling in terms of production cycle and manpower costs is a hot topic amongst producers.

Often times, the first solution considered is full automation, which can be a path to reduced cycle time and labor costs. This is not, however, the only solution.

Smart guidance based on sensors and controls can be used to assist crane operators in making picks and delivering loads to their destinations. Consider taking the guesswork and jogged movements from the crane controls if the operator were to have clear indications of when to slow and stop the bridge and trolley motions.

This approach has the ability to improve material handling between fixed load/unload positions. Suggested cases in which guidance may be a good choice, and factors to consider, along with system implementation suggestions to handle crane control systems will be discussed in this presentation.
